Fisher-Price iXL has been picked as a personal favorite by the Mattel CEO for the Holiday 2010 Season.
Robert Eckert, Chief Executive Officer of Mattel, Inc. says .....“At Mattel, each year we create thousands of new toys – everything from our beloved classic brands like Barbie®, Hot Wheels® and Fisher-Price, to new favorites that are sure to spur kids’ imaginations for years to come,” said Eckert. “But of all the toys we introduced at Toy Fair this year, I have my own personal favorite – iXL, the new Fisher-Price multi-tech, six-in-one smart device for preschoolers.” Check out www.businesswire.com for more details on this article.
Since all the big kids are up-to-date on the new technology like Kindle, IPad, Nook and other products, it's only natural that little ones want to be a part of this wave.
Review from "Worth It": E-Readers for Youngsters?
The WSJ's Willa Plank reviews the Fisher-Price iXL e-book reader, marketed to children ages 3 to 6, in this week's Worth It. And toymakers want in, too. Fisher-Price, subsidiary of toy giant Mattel Inc., is slated to come out with its first e-reader this summer, the iXL for $79.99.
"The first thing that caught my eye was the color touch-screen, which is unlike most e-readers for adults. Another thing I noticed right away was its size. It's compact and weighs just a pound. The screen is 3.5 inches diagonally. The product appears durable enough to handle the inevitable wear and tear from kid use.
The home screen looks a bit like another kid favorite – the iPhone. It has six app-like boxes for different features. You can trace your letters, draw on your own uploaded photos or read a story, of course.
The device is designed for early readers – aged 3 to 6, so it offers the option of having a story read aloud or reading it yourself. The story on the prototype we tested was called "Monkey Games." Kids can follow along with the voice as each word is highlighted as it is read out loud.
I really liked the animation that appeared after each page is read, allowing even childre who cannot read a chance to follow along and enjoy the story.
The e-reader also helps build vocabulary by giving animated definitions of certain words. For example, when we pressed the word "jump" on a page the monkey jumped. It also helps kids with spelling. Press certain words once and you get the first letter of the word. Press it twice and you get the spelling of the word.
Still, the reading experience wasn't perfect. First of all, although I didn't really have trouble with it, the words were a bit small. Second, it took me a couple of tries to turn the pages with the stylus. To turn a page, you have to press with the stylus the corner of the screen where an "upturned page" is located. These upturned pages in the corner are quite small, and thus hard to press.
The graphics were also a bit choppy. The company said the device we had is not the final product and may have a few kinks.
I recruited some 4-year-old kids to test out the iXL System, and they went at it without much guidance. They easily grasped the meaning of the app symbols, such as the camera for the photo app.
The kids liked the "note book" app, where you can practice tracing letters. Another favorite was the photo app, where you can upload your photos to draw on them.
Although we couldn't test out the customization part of the product, since the device we had was a prototype, I really like the idea that you can upload your own photos and music to play with. This makes the product "your own," in a sense.
However, downloading content is a bit of a hassle. The product relies on software CDs whose content can be downloaded through a USB connection. More stories, games and art studio app backgrounds can be downloaded through these CDs, at a cost of $24.99 each. The product takes an SD card, but without one the iXL can hold preloaded content with content from two software CDs.
This product, along with another e-reader for kids we looked at, the VTech FLiP, both don't have Wi-Fi capability. The VTech FLiP relies on cartridges. However, VTech plans to offer an online marketplace to download content for its product at its launch in August through the company's Web site.
Perhaps Fisher-Price should think about providing the same option for downloading new content.
Is the Fisher-Price e-reader worth it? The price is fairly high for a kids toy, especially when you add the cost of the CDs. It also has a few kinks to work out before it hits the market, including making the animation more smooth. But overall, I'm excited to see kids reading more with products like these."
